Helping herbs

Health authorities recently revealed that about 1,800 species of wild plants currently used as key ingredients in herbal medicines are on the verge of extinction.

Read the following story from the Bangkok Post to learn about how authorities plan to tackle this problem.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri said on May 9 that deforestation was a major cause of the problem, as many of the important herbal plants are only found in forests. Many of them cannot be cultivated due to a lack of research in how to grow them properly, the minister said.

HOT TOPIC

The ministry is currently discussing the issue with the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry, non-governmental organisations and local communities to ensure that these important local herbs can survive and thrive. One option under discussion is to expand and increase the number of herb conservation areas where the endangered plants can grow.

SAFETY ZONES

Currently, 20 areas have been declared plant conservation zones, according to Suphan Srithamma, head of the Department of Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Suphan added that nine more forest areas will likely be soon added to the list of protected zones.

LEGAL ISSUE

Those who try to reclaim forests in the herbal conservation zones could face legal action brought by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, officials said.

The Public Health Ministry, meanwhile, has set aside about 76 million baht to fund projects to protect and propagate at least 50 species of herbal plants each year, according to public health permanent secretary Paijit Warachit.

Paijit said that Kwao khruea khao, chan khao and chan daeng are currently the most endangered medicinal plants.
